Progress Report

As a child I always dreaded this day of school and would hide every time my report card was sent home for my parents' signature. But times are changing now and these meetings give us parents an opportunity to not just get an update on our child's progress, but also to ask any questions that we may have regarding the future development

I remember when Anvesha was still a baby, (well she still is and will always remain a baby for me even when she grows up to be a teenager), I could track her developmental milestones in each of her wellness checkups. But as a preschooler these benchmarks aren't as apparent since 3-4 year olds are going through social, emotional and intellectual developments that are harder to pinpoint.

Anvesha is into her 3rd month of attending preschool and this time has afforded her not only academic growth but also growth in the areas of socializing with peers, sharing and empathy. She has made friends in school and is often referred to as the "baby of the class" since she is the youngest one in her batch. She is extremely fond of her teachers, Miss Riddhi & Miss Kathleen and has stories to share when she comes home from school.

Today I attended Anvesha's first parent-teacher conference, or rather parent-teacher meeting as we would typically say in India. I was really looking forward to meeting with the teachers so as to understand Anvesha's strengths as well as her developmental areas.

Comments from her teacher:
" Anvesha is bright and an independent child. She is evidently happy at school and the learning opportunity it provides. She is currently working on developing her number sense, letter sounds and dexterity in writing."

She has been exceptionally consistent in social & emotional development and is learning the specialty classes such as music, spanish, physical education, cooking, science and art. She is still learning to hold the pencil with grip, writing her name, tracing and pronunciation. Geography is a new subject introduced to her and is learning well. In the areas of Mathematics, she has mastered the number quantification and is learning subtraction.

Iam now confident that Anvesha will master her confidence, motor skills and concentration that will lead her towards academic and social success.

Elmo Party

This week, we celebrated Anvesha's birthday with an adorable Elmo theme party. It was so much fun to plan and host. Almost every toddler is a fan of Elmo and Anvesha has loved him for a long time now,so I knew that an Elmo themed party was the way to go this year. I began the preparations 1-2 months in advance and had earlier thought to have it in one of those bouncies, but decided on a community hall instead. We scheduled it at 3 PM on a Sunday afternoon on purpose ( although it was the Superbowl that day) as we didn't want to hold the kids too long since it was school the next day.

So the theme is decided, the venue is decided- but how to keep the kids occupied and enjoy the party?? Well, since Elmo is a muppet, so I thought of having a puppet show for her birthday party this time and I must say all the kids enjoyed a lot. Anvesha was so thrilled to see the 8 feet tall giraffe that she was jumping in excitement. A surprise element to the show was the appearance of Elmo while he was playing hide and seek with the kids. Not only the kids, but the parents had fun too. Thanks Sharon, for the wonderful show. Although is was slightly heavy on the pocket, but seeing the joy in Anvesha's eyes after the puppet show was an indication that it was money well spent. At the end of the show the kids got to take pictures with the giraffe and there was a fun activity for the kids as well wherein they colored their own puppets.

I didn't do anything extra special with the cake this time. I remember last year for her rainbow birthday theme party, I researched a lot for that perfect rainbow cake. Since Sesame street characters aren't as popular as the Disney ones, I just got a simple design and placed an Elmo toy as a cake topper. I know the kids would care less as long as its a cake, but I still feel I could have done more with the cake and the decorations. There few balloons and Elmo & Bigbird air walker balloons that were a hit amongst the kids.

Anvesha was so busy having fun and playing with her friends, that she couldn't settle down for pictures. We still managed to take few pics. The color of her dress was carefully chosen keeping the Elmo theme in mind.

Thanks to everyone who made Anvesha's birthday celebration so successful. She had a great time and we hope you had fun too. Thanks for all the birthday presents.

Anvesha is 3 !!!!

I am now a mother of a three year old !!!

Of course I've been warned about the Terrible Twos and the Terrible Threes, but I'd rather enjoy this age. Every age, every situation and every person is not without drawbacks. There is no perfect thing as a perfect situation. Quality of life is built on figuring out what is great about the situation that you are in and enjoying every bit of it :)

So what is great about a 3 year old?

For starters... you get to have all the answers and you are able to solve all of their problems. These tiny little monsters see you- their moms as the most prettiest person in the universe. You have control over everywhere they go and who they play with. I know all of that will end pretty soon :( As much as I long to sleep past 6.00 AM, set my schedule on a whim, travel to exotic places and go for fine dining again, I know for sure that I will miss the hell out of my 3 year old Anvesha once she is all grown up.

As a ritual, I've been sending you notes on each birthday and this time won't be an exception either. :)

"My little baby girl,

Happy Birthday!!! You are 3 today :) Every day with you (not just your birthday) is a celebration of the day you came into our lives. Every moment is one to cherish, even through tears and tantrums. Memories flood my mind as I think about your first words, steps, foods, and other milestones. Each day, it seems, I notice that you are growing and learning more and more. Climbing up your playground ladder, counting to 30, singing all the words to your favorite songs. You are becoming a young lady, and I couldn’t be more proud of you.

For now, I want to focus on today and celebrating our little person who asked for an Elmo birthday party.
Today is your day. My blog is all about you and I feel bad that you are down with fever today. I hope you feel better soon so that you can enjoy your birthday cake and the candies.

Here’s to celebrating many more birthdays, milestones, and moments.

Happy birthday, baby!!!

Hugs, Mamma"

First Day of Preschool !!!!

The first day of preschool has arrived and it's time for Anvesha to begin an educational journey that will last nearly two decades.  Although it is the middle of the school year, we still enrolled her to TLC Montessori since she is ready for school now. Although, Montessori philosophy  is a very new concept for me, I am sure it will be good for Anvesha in the formative years. I have the preschool checklist ticked off, clothes ready, backpack ready, lunchbox ready and most importantly, camera ready to click loads of pics on this big day :)

Here are few glimpses  from this morning...

Anvesha all excited to get ready for her first day of preschool, errrrr.... rather, "last first day of school". We got her this sign board especially for the first day of school photos ;)

After all the photo session, I continued the tradition of giving 'dahi cheeni', the way mom used to give us at the start of any important day like exams, long distance travel etc. Anvesha took everyone's blessings and prayed in front of our temple before starting for school.

My little girl has become big and it's an emotional moment for me as a mom and so I just wanted to leave a note for Anvesha to read when she grows up.

"My little monster,

Today you wore your best attire with a small addition of a hot pink backpack. You walked out of the car into the door of your first day of preschool. You will perhaps put your backpack neatly in your cubby, open your jacket and follow all instructions gracefully. You will do all this and more with coaching, I am sure- but it won't be from me.

Today was your first day at preschool and I am glad and relieved that it went without shedding a tear.My heart was so full of joy to see how excited you were to enter those classroom doors to meet your teacher.I held back tears, hid at the lobby, just to catch a last glimpse of you as you step into your educational journey.Today, I released you into the world and your circle of influence will increase in the coming few months. As I write this note to you, I am staring at the clock relentlessly just to wait to come back and pick you up. I want to listen intently as you tell me all about what you did on your first day of school.

Please remember that it does not matter how popular you are. What does matter is always treating others with kindness and respect. THAT is what you will want to be remembered by. Dream big and shoot for the stars. Always set goals and work your hardest to achieve them. I’ll always believe in you because I am your biggest fan.

Can't wait to meet you after school now.

Stay Blessed Always..... love Mamma".

Anvesha meets Santa Claus !!

You better watch out,
You better not cry,
You better not pout,
I'm telling you why:
Santa Claus is coming to town!!

The holiday season abounds with traditions and photos with the big fat guy in red is right at the top of that merry list. We used to have Christmas parties in school where one of the teachers was dressed up as Santa and used to distribute gifts to all the children. I had always been very thrilled every year to get gifts from Santa Claus.

Santa photos are a tradition for many families, but they can be so pricey, I am glad we found a free photo with Santa spot at Gillman Village closeby. There is nothing worse than battling the mall crowds and then having to wait in line for two hours with a screaming toddler. I am glad we didn't have to go through all that.

Anvesha had her first formal pictures taken with Santa Claus and I had no idea how she would react to seeing Santa. I didn’t know if she’d be giddy and giggly or if she’d be one of those kids who is terrified of Santa and screams the entire time she’s on his lap. Judging from the pics, I’d say she was pretty chilled out on meeting Santa.

I’m happy I have a photo like the one above to frame and save as a treasured keepsake… I am also thrilled to have photos like the ones that follow....

Here are few pics in which Santa is guessing Anvesha's age ;)

 Are you 4 years old?

Are you 3 years old?

 Are you 2 years old?

This was a fun Saturday morning and Anvesha was all smiles after meeting Santa Claus and she was even more thrilled to get a candy from him. Santa is certainly a celebrity for kids and we love him too !!

Ho Ho Ho...... Merry Christmas !!!!

Sneak peak into Anvesha's room

I resumed my corporate life at Amazon after long gap of 5 years and it has been very time consuming and hectic at the same time. Although I try to be regular in my posts, there is only so much time in the day and sometimes things have to take a back seat. Unfortunately, it has been my blog.

We moved into our new house earlier this year and absolutely love the area and the neighborhood. New house also means a lot of opportunities to be creative with the interiors. Anvesha had been co sleeping with us and it was time to move her into her own room. I was happy to spend some time on creative matters, like setting up Anvesha's room. So, onto my post....

We selected the loft area to be Anvesha's room, it is adjoining our room  and has an open feel to it. Originally, when we moved to the house, this area just had her toys and was a play area rather than her room. Although I haven't done anything fancy, I wanted the room to look as colorful as possible, as opposed to just sticking to a single color theme- although the bed sheet and the quilt is still pink :), but other than that there are bins of assorted colors arranged in line opposite her mattress. We did not buy her a bed on purpose because this girl rotates 360 degrees while sleeping and there is a high possibility she might just trip over her bed :) There are bed rails available, but we still thought having just a twin mattress would have a warm and welcoming effect to it. There are body pillows arranged on the three sides, just to give a cozy look.

I love the three flower lamps on the wall that we picked up from Ikea. These lamps were originally put in Anvesha's room next to her crib, where she never slept :) I was planning to put up a giant wall sticker opposite this wall, but haven't decided on which one, maybe a rainbow- I am yet to find the best one.

Every time I go take pictures, I miss out on the best lighting- I am not a great photographer, so it takes time for me to select the ones I think are even close to being good enough to post.

Anyways, this was a sneak peak into Anvesha's room. Nothing great, but just wanted to share this here, since this is her blog.

Anvesha learns to dance

It seems like just yesterday when Anvesha took her first steps. She, like most of us enjoys music and loves dancing. Off late I have seen her copy few dance steps whenever a song comes on television. So we thought it might be great idea to get her enrolled in formal dance classes. Whether it's ballet or jazz, dance classes for little girls are a perfect opportunity to build their motor skills.I also feel that if you know dance, and with that I mean formal dance, it gives you a wide opportunity to oversome your inhibitions and eventually turn into a social butterfly :)

Anvesha has a lot of energy and in addition to bursting her moves at home in spontaneous bursts of toddler dancing, she is now ready for fairly complex choreography. After doing some survey on which is the best dance school for little ones, we went for a trial class at Gotta Dance, just as to see how she enjoys this 30 minute class. She is almost 3 and can thrive in small classes in which the teachers are the only grown-ups in the room. Many dance studios, including Gotta Dance  allow you to watch your pint-size performer through a waiting-room window. The benefit of these “separation classes” is that children get the chance to learn more independently.

Anvesha entered the room and was thrilled to meet Miss Alex- her dance teacher and very gracefully followed all the instructions that were being given to her. Sigh !!!! I wish she did that at home too!. Most dance studios tend to have students wear leotards and tights- since this was a trial class we had Anvesha in tights and a top. She was all smiles towards the end of the class and didn't want to come out of the room. We had to drag her home and promised to come back the following week. We confirmed our registration towards the end of the class and bought her a cute leotard and dance shoes.

Here's my ballerina all set for her dance leason...
